On this day in 1895, German physicist Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen discovered x-rays. He named the unknown "invisible light," or ray that he observed an x-ray, because in mathematics "X" is used to indicated the unknown quantity. He quickly determined that x-rays would pass through the tissue of humans and when used to expose film, would make things like the underlying bones visible. As early as 1896, x-rays were already being utilized clinically in the United States for such things as bone fractures and gun shot wounds.
As the second Monday in November, today is designated as World Orphans Day. November 8th is also National Parents As Teachers Day. On November 8, 1889, Montana became the 41st state. On a lighter note, November 8th is both Abet and Aid Punsters Day and Cook Something Bold and Pungent Day.
