On November 22, 1954, Humane Society of the United States was established. Today, then, is the 36th birthday of our nation’s largest animal protection organization.
Today is also National Stop the Violence Day, would have been former first lady Abagail Adam's 266th birthday, and is the 20th anniversary of Margaret Thatcher's resignation from her position as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.
November 22nd, however, is probably most famous for what happened in 1963. While riding in an open vehicle in Dallas, Texas, President John F. Kennedy was assassinated by a sniper.
On November 22, 1859, Charles Darwin's "Origin of Species" was published on this date by London publisher John Murray. Interestingly, the term "evolution" did not appear until the 1872 (last) version of this work.
