Mickey Mouse Day 2010

Today is the 322nd day of the year. There are 43 days remaining until the end of the year (37 days till Christmas). If your birthday is today, you are a Scorpio.

Although Mickey Mouse actually appeared six months earlier in the silent animated cartoon, "Plane Crazy," the animated short "Steamboat Willie," released on November 18, 1928, also featuring Mickey Mouse, was the first to feature synchronized sound.  "The Gallopin' Gaucho" was actually the second Mickey Mouse cartoon made, but was released later.  Nonetheless, the Walt Disney Company considers the November 18, 1928 release date of "Steamboat Willie" as Mickey Mouse's birthday.  Therefore, today he is 82 years old.  Happy Birthday, Mickey!!!

Today (third Thursday of November) is the 30th annual Great American Smokeout sponsored by the American Cancer society.  If you've been trying to quit, today is the day to put away your cigarettes for good.  Maybe you can kick the habit for good.

The third Thursday of November is also Use Less Stuff Day.  November 18th is annually Married to a Scorpio Support Day.  Today would have been the 101st birthday of American singer Johnny Mercer.

On November 18, 1963, the first push-button phones went into service in two Pennsylvania cities.  Touch tone service was available as an option to standard rotary dial service for an additional charge.  On November 18, 1978, 912 people died at the Jonestown Massacre in Guyana, the largest murder suicide in history.
