Guy Fawkes Day 2010

Today is the 309th day of the year.  There are 56 days remaining until the end of the year (50 days till Christmas).  If your birthday is today, you are a Scorpio.

On November 5, 1605, a group of provincial English Catholics attempted the Gunpowder Plot, to blow up the House of Lords during the State Opening of Parliament and assassinate King James I, installing his nine-year-old daughter, Princess Elizabeth, as the new Catholic Queen.  The plot was discovered and stopped, with a mercenary named Guy Fawkes caught in the cellar of Parliament with 36 barrels of gunpowder.  November 5th has become known, in England, as Bonfire Night (or Guy Fawkes Day/Night) and is commemorated with fireworks and by burning effigies of Guy Fawkes on a bonfire.

Happy 33rd Anniversary to former President George W. and First Lady Laura Bush.

This is also the anniversary of the first NBA player to shatter a backboard.  Apparently Chuck Connors of the Boston Celtics did so during a pre-game warmup on November 5, 1946.  This somewhat surprised me -- I would have expected this to have occurred in a more modern era of the game.  Chuck Connors, however, also played major league baseball with the Brooklyn Dodgers and the Chicago Cubs and was star of the television series “The Rifleman.”
