World Television Day 2010

Today is the 325th day of the year. There are 40 days remaining until the end of the year (34 days till Christmas). If your birthday is today, you are a Scorpio.

In 1996, the United Nations (UN) General Assembly proclaimed November 21st to be World Television Day. November 21, 1996 was the date of the UN's first World Television Forum. The UN also recognizes the third Sunday in November as the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims.

Today is also the 38th annual World Hello Day, begun in 1973 as a response to the conflict between Egypt and Israel. The idea is to greet ten people to demonstrate the importance of personal communication for preserving peace.

Supposedly, when one crosses a moose and a walrus, the result is called an "alascattalo." Alascattalo Day, which just so happens to fall on this date, is a day to honor Alaskan humor.

Today kicks off National Family Week, National Bible Week, and National Game and Puzzle Week.

On this date in 1789, North Carolina became the 12th state to ratify the Constitution. In 1800, on this date, the United States Congress first met in Washington, at the newly completed north wing of the Capitol building (they had been meeting in Philadelphia from 1790-1800). On November 21, 1980, 86 million viewers tuned into "Dallas" to see who shot J.R. Ewing. On November 21, 1991, Frenchman Gerard d’Aboville completed a four month journey in which he rowed himself across the Pacific Ocean from Choshi, Japan to Ilwaco, Washington in the United States. Fifteen years ago (November 21,1995), the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed above 5000 for the first time.

The November full moon, occurring now, is called the Beaver Moon because at this time of year, beavers are industriously preparing themselves for the coming winter.

This is week 11 of the 2010 NFL season.
