World Teachers Day 2010

Today is the 278th day of the year. There are 87 days remaining until the end of the year (81 days till Christmas).

World Teachers Day was founded in 1994 and commemorates the anniversary of the signing in 1966 of the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization/International Labour Organization (UNESCO/ILO) Recommendation Concerning the Status of Teachers. Over 100 countries acknowledge, on this day, an awareness, understanding and appreciation for the vital contribution that teachers make to education and improvement of their people and communities.

Stocks rose sharply today (DJIA was up 193.45) following news that activity expanded in the U.S. services sector last month. The Pakistani immigrant who tried to set off a car bomb in Times Square received a life sentence. Government official announced that solar panels, to heat water and supply some electricity, will be installed on the roof of the White House by spring of 2011. Members of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra went on strike yesterday over a substantial pay cut. Major League Baseball playoffs begin tomorrow. In the American League, its Texas vs. Tampa Bay and the Yankees vs. the Twins. In the National League, the Cincinnati Reds are in the playoff for the first time in 15 years to face the Philadephia Phillies and the Atlanta Braves will play the San Francisco Giants.
