International Day Of The Nacho 2010

Today is the 294th day of the year. There are 71 days remaining until the end of the year (65 days till Christmas). If your birthday is today, you are a Libra.

Nachos originated in the city of Piedras Negras, Coahuila, Mexico, just over the border from Eagle Pass, Texas, at a restaurant called the Victory Club. In 1943, the maître d', Ignacio "Nacho" Anaya, invented a new snack with what little he had available in the kitchen: tortillas and cheese. Anaya cut the tortillas into triangles, added longhorn cheddar cheese, quickly heated them, and added sliced jalapeño peppers. Anaya went on to work at the Moderno Restaurant in Piedras Negras, which still uses the original recipe. He also opened his own restaurant, "Nacho's Restaurant", in Piedras Negras. His original recipe was printed in the 1954 St. Anne's Cookbook. Ignacio Anaya died in 1975. In his honor, a bronze plaque was erected in Piedras Negras, and October 21 was declared the International Day of the Nacho.

In the UK, October 21st is Apple Day. The Credit Union National Association (CUNA) has set aside the third Thursday in October as International Credit Union Day. In a similar vein, the American Bankers Association has designated the third Thursday in October as Get Smart About Credit Day. Since 1998, October 22nd has also been International Stuttering Awareness Day.
