Navy Birthday 2010

Today is the 286th day of the year. There are 79 days remaining until the end of the year (73 days till Christmas). If your birthday is today, you are a Libra.

Happy 235th birthday to the United States Navy today! The U.S. Navy traces its origins to the Continental Navy, which the Continental Congress established on 13 October 1775, by authorizing two armed vessels to cruise in search of munitions ships supplying the British Army in America.

Today is also National Bring Teddy Bear to Work Day and International Top Spinning Day. On a more serious note, in 1989, the United Nations General Assembly designated the second Wednesday of October as International Day for Natural Disaster Reduction and, in 2001, decided to maintain the observance.

The rescue of the trapped miners in Chile went well today. In midtown Atlanta, rapper T.I. helped police persuade a man not to jump off the roof of high-rise hotel. Stocks rallied today, as the Dow Jones industrial average closed up another 76 points.

For those watching TV tonight, the TV Guide Hot List includes: "The Middle" (ABC, 8/7c), "Survivor: Nicaragua" (CBS, 8/7c), "Hell's Kitchen" (FOX, 8/7c), "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" (NBC, 9/8c), "CNBC Titans" (CNBC, 9/8c), "Storm Chasers" (Discovery, 10/9c), and "What's Eating You?" (E!, 10/9c).
