Alaska Day 2010

Today is the 291st day of the year. There are 74 days remaining until the end of the year (68 days till Christmas). If your birthday is today, you are a Libra.

Today is the anniversary of the transfer of Alaska on October 18, 1867, from Russia to the United States. This is a holiday in Alaska; when it falls on a weekend it is observed on the following Monday. Today is also World Menopause Day and, in Canada, Persons Day (a day to commemorate the anniversary of the 1929 ruling that declared women to be persons in Canada). In addition, today is National Chocolate Cupcake Day (yum).

President Obama will appear on a December 8th episode of the "MythBusters" science TV show. Mark Twain forbade publication of his last book -- a three-volume autobiography -- until now, 100 years after his death (he actually died on April 21, 1910). The book will be officially published on November 15th.

For those watching TV tonight, the TV Guide Hot List includes: "The Talk" (CBS, 2/1c), "Dancing with the Stars" (ABC, 8/7c), "House" (FOX, 8/7c), "How I Met Your Mother" (CBS, 8/7c), "Monday Night Football - Tennessee vs. Jacksonville" (ESPN, 8:30/7:30c), "Cake Boss" (TLC, 9/8c), and "Bret Michaels: Life as I Know It" (VH1, 10/9c).
